State has plan to save oyster industry

In my last post, Leading journalist says Plaquemines is dying, we looked at how the oyster fisherman in Plaquemines are going to potentially be put out of business by the proposed diversions that are part of the state’s master plan.

This could be devastating not just for Louisiana, but also for the rest of the country. The Gulf of Mexico produces only about 2 percent of the seafood that is consumed in the U.S., but 70 percent of the oysters. The price of oysters could skyrocket if a solution is not found. It appears the state has already considered that.

In the following excerpt from my interview with Mark Schleifstein, environmental reporter at the New Orleans Times-Picayune and, he discusses plans by the state to relocate those oyster farmers to new oyster leases in better locations.
